ZTE
Manufacturer Profile
ZTE Corporation is a Chinese partially state-owned telecommunications technology company founded in 1985 in Shenzhen, Guangdong, originally as Zhongxing Semiconductor Co., Ltd. by investors linked to China's Ministry of Aerospace Industry. The company — "ZTE" standing for ZhongXing Telecommunications — began as a small semiconductor and telephone equipment maker and grew into one of the world's largest suppliers of wireless, exchange, optical transmission and data telecom gear. It was renamed Zhongxing New Telecommunications Equipment Co., Ltd. in 1993 and adopted the "state-owned and private-operating" model. ZTE listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange in 1997 and the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in December 2004. ZTE's rise on the global carrier market came in the mid-2000s: in 2006 it captured roughly 40% of new global CDMA network orders, and by 2009 it was the third-largest GSM equipment vendor worldwide, with customers including Vodafone, Telus, Telstra and France Telecom alongside China's major operators. It also holds a significant share of LTE patents and, in 2023, ranked 11th worldwide in PCT patent applications filed. On the consumer side, ZTE sells mobile phones under several brands. The Blade line targets budget and mid-range markets, the Axon series covers the premium segment (Axon 7, Axon 9 Pro, Axon 10 Pro, Axon 40 Ultra), while the Nubia and RedMagic brands — historically ZTE subsidiaries — focus on gaming and enthusiast devices. In the United States ZTE entered the market in 2011, supplying value phones to prepaid and discount carriers such as Cricket and MetroPCS, and has since sponsored NBA teams including the Houston Rockets and Golden State Warriors. The company's history has been shaped by major regulatory and geopolitical conflicts. In 2017 ZTE pleaded guilty to illegally exporting U.S. technology to Iran and North Korea and was fined a record US$1.19 billion. In April 2018 the U.S. Department of Commerce imposed a seven-year export ban after finding ZTE had violated the terms of its settlement; the ban was lifted in July 2018 after ZTE paid an additional US$1 billion fine, replaced its entire senior management and established an independent compliance function. In 2020 the U.S. FCC designated ZTE a national security threat, and the Secure Equipment Act of 2021 led the FCC to ban the sale and import of ZTE equipment in the United States. ZTE remains active outside the U.S., serving customers in more than 160 countries and regions. In 2023 the European Commission banned ZTE from providing telecommunication services in the EU, and in 2025 the Commission recommended that all EU member states exclude ZTE and Huawei equipment from their telecom infrastructure. The company continues to expand its 5G rollout work, including a 2025 collaboration with Malaysia's U Mobile to deploy the country's second 5G network in East Malaysia.
