Oppo
Manufacturer Profile
Oppo is a Chinese consumer electronics and technology company founded in 2004 by Tony Chen (Chen Mingyong) in Dongguan, Guangdong Province. The brand name, which evokes the Latin word for "opportunity," was registered in China as early as 2001. Oppo began as an audio and video equipment maker, debuting internationally with its X3 MP3 player in 2005, before pivoting to smartphones and expanding into more than 60 markets worldwide. Oppo operates as part of the BBK Electronics conglomerate, a privately held Chinese group that also owns the Vivo, OnePlus and Realme brands. In June 2016 it became the largest smartphone manufacturer in China, selling through more than 200,000 retail outlets, and has since held a top-five position in global shipments, with roughly 9% of the world market and over 600 million monthly active users. In 2018 the company wound down its disc-player business to concentrate fully on mobile devices. Its smartphone portfolio is organized around three main lines: the budget-friendly A series, the mid-range Reno series, and the flagship Find X series, joined by the Find N line of foldables. The Find N3 (2023) was co-developed with OnePlus, whose Open shares its hardware, and the foldable range continues with the Find N5 and N6. Oppo's software is ColorOS, built on Android, and the company has invested heavily in camera technology, including a multi-year imaging partnership with Hasselblad that tunes the flagship Find X cameras. A signature Oppo technology is VOOC fast charging, unveiled in 2014 and iterated through SuperVOOC and Warp Charge variants up to a 240 W demonstration at MWC 2022. The company also produces smartwatches (OPPO Watch series since 2020), wireless earbuds, power banks and audio hardware, and ranks among the world's top patent holders, with around 54,000 granted patents as of 2024. Oppo is known for high-profile brand partnerships and sponsorships, including FC Barcelona, the Indian cricket team, Roland-Garros and Wimbledon, and League of Legends esports, and it manufactures phones in China as well as in factories in India, Indonesia and other countries.
