2.4GHz wireless improves on Bluetooth

If you want wireless without the lag, 2.4GHz gaming headsets are the better route. They use a USB dongle to create a dedicated link rather than the shared Bluetooth stack. The result is typically under 20ms latency on gaming-grade models, fast enough that most players cannot tell the difference from wired. Bandwidth is also higher, allowing better audio fidelity depending on design.

Many top wireless gaming headsets use 2.4GHz as the primary connection and add Bluetooth as a secondary mode for phones and everyday listening. The trade-off is price. These models cost considerably more than a basic wired option, and console compatibility can be picky, so you need to check the right model for your platform.

Wired remains the reliable baseline

Wired headsets are still the safest pick for latency-sensitive players and those on a budget. At a desk the cable is rarely a problem if you remember to unplug before standing up. A 3.5mm or USB connection gives negligible latency, no battery management and no risk of wireless dropouts. They are essentially plug-and-play, aside from optional manufacturer software.

At the same price point wired models often deliver better sound quality than wireless alternatives. You pay less and get consistent, reliable audio every session, which is why many of the best gaming headsets remain wired.

Console controllers also support wired audio directly. The PS5 DualSense has a 3.5mm jack on the bottom, as do standard Xbox pads and the Switch 2 Pro Controller. Because the audio is sent wirelessly to the controller there is a small amount of latency, but it is usually negligible and can be reduced further by connecting the controller to the console with a cable.

What to buy for gaming

Focus on low latency and reliable audio quality first. If performance is the priority, wired is the safest option. If you want to go cable-free, choose a 2.4GHz headset, ideally one that also includes Bluetooth for secondary use. Treat Bluetooth as a bonus for music and calls, not the main feature for competitive gaming.
