Yota
Manufacturer Profile
Yota was a Russian technology company that originally operated as a mobile phone brand and mobile broadband manufacturer before transitioning into a mobile virtual network operator. The brand was a trademark of Skartel LLC, a subsidiary within the broader telecommunications ecosystem controlled by Garsdale Services Investment Ltd. This ownership structure linked Yota to major stakeholders in the Russian telecom sector, including AF-Telecom, Telconet Capital, and the Russian Technologies State Corporation. In the mobile hardware market, Yota distinguished itself by developing devices that often featured dual-screen designs, a concept that set it apart from many of its competitors. The company aimed to capture a niche in the global smartphone industry with these unique form factors and integrated broadband solutions. However, the manufacturer’s operational history was cut short by legal and financial difficulties. Yota eventually suffered bankruptcy as a result of a lawsuit, leading to the cessation of its activities as a hardware producer. Following the collapse of its manufacturing and hardware division, the Yota name persisted primarily as a mobile virtual network operator. In this capacity, the brand focused on providing SIM cards and mobile services to consumers in Russia. The shift from a hardware-focused brand to a service-based operator marked the end of its presence in the global smartphone market, leaving behind a legacy of experimental design choices that did not survive the company's financial restructuring.
