Videocon

Manufacturer Profile

Videocon Industries Limited was an Indian multinational conglomerate that operated in the mobile phone sector before ceasing its trading activities. The company was founded in 1979 by Venugopal Dhoot and was headquartered in Mumbai. While it is most historically recognized for being the third-largest picture tube manufacturer in the world, the group expanded its manufacturing footprint to include mobile devices, maintaining 17 manufacturing sites within India and additional plants in mainland China, Poland, Italy, and Mexico. The company’s operations in the mobile industry were part of a broader industrial portfolio that valued the conglomerate at approximately US$5.5 billion at its peak. However, Videocon faced severe financial difficulties, leading it to stop trading and enter corporate insolvency proceedings in June 2018. The insolvency process concluded in June 2021 when the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) approved a bid by the Vedanta Group to take over the company, effectively ending the original ownership structure and paving the way for new management to assume control of the remaining assets.
