SoftBank

Manufacturer Profile

SoftBank Group Corp. is a Japanese multinational investment holding company headquartered in Minato, Tokyo, that has evolved from a telecommunications provider into a global technology investor. While the group is primarily known today for its massive portfolio of technology investments, it retains a significant presence in the mobile phone industry through its affiliate, SoftBank Corporation. This subsidiary operates as the third-largest wireless carrier in Japan, serving over 45 million subscribers as of 2021. The company is led by its founder and largest shareholder, Masayoshi Son, whose controversial leadership style has driven the group’s aggressive expansion into various sectors. SoftBank’s current corporate identity is heavily defined by its Vision Fund, which holds over $100 billion in capital and is recognized as the world’s largest technology-focused venture capital fund. Through this fund and direct stakes, the group invests in a wide array of industries including robotics, artificial intelligence, logistics, and e-commerce, holding significant interests in major global firms such as Arm, Alibaba, and Deutsche Telekom. Although SoftBank Group is not a traditional keiretsu, it maintains close financial ties with Mizuho Financial Group, its primary lender. The company’s branding is rooted in Japanese history, with its logo derived from the flag of the Kaientai, a naval trading company established in 1865 by Sakamoto Ryōma near the end of the Tokugawa shogunate. In recent years, SoftBank has continued to position itself at the forefront of technological infrastructure, announcing a $500 billion artificial intelligence infrastructure project titled Stargate in January 2025. This initiative, developed in conjunction with OpenAI, MGX, and Oracle, aims to build American-made AI capabilities in the United States and represents a major continuation of the company’s focus on large-scale tech investments.
