Philips, formally known as Koninklijke Philips N.V., is a Dutch multinational corporation with a rich history that began in 1891 in Eindhoven. Founded by Gerard Philips and his father Frederik, the company initially produced light bulbs before expanding into one of the world’s largest electronics conglomerates during the 20th century. While the company is now primarily associated with health technology, its legacy in consumer electronics is significant, having held global market dominance in areas such as audio and video technologies, including the invention of both the cassette and compact disc formats. In the mobile phone industry, Philips operated as a prominent player during the late 1990s and 2000s, offering a range of handsets that often emphasized design and multimedia capabilities. However, the company’s focus shifted dramatically in the 2010s as it underwent a strategic restructuring to become a healthcare-focused enterprise. This transition involved divesting several of its consumer electronics divisions, including the sale of its television manufacturing unit to TP Vision, its lighting business to Signify, and its home appliance segment to Versuni. Consequently, Philips no longer manufactures mobile phones, having exited the market to concentrate on divisions such as Diagnosis and Treatment, Connected Care, and Personal Health.
