KDDI

Manufacturer Profile

KDDI Corporation is a major Japanese telecommunications operator that was established in the year 2000. The company was formed through the strategic merger of three distinct entities: DDI Corporation, a long-distance communications firm; KDD Corporation, which had previously served as Japan’s state-monopoly international telecommunications provider; and Ido Corporation, a mobile network operator. This consolidation allowed KDDI to unify various telecommunications services under a single corporate umbrella, creating a comprehensive network infrastructure for both domestic and international communications. In the mobile sector, KDDI underwent significant structural changes in 2001 to fully integrate its operations. During this period, the company absorbed the regional companies of the DDI-Cellular Group, effectively unifying them under the prominent Au brand. This move streamlined its mobile services and strengthened its market presence. Today, KDDI holds the position of the second-largest mobile telecommunications provider in Japan, trailing only NTT Docomo in terms of the number of customer contracts. The company’s mobile portfolio is primarily centered around the Au brand, which serves as its flagship offering. To address different market segments and consumer needs, KDDI also operates sub-brands such as UQ Mobile and Povo. Beyond mobile cellular services, KDDI provides a range of network services, including Internet Protocol services under the Au One Net brand and Fiber to the Home services marketed as Au Hikari. While the company has historically offered other legacy services such as ADSL broadband and IP telephony over copper lines, these specific services have since been discontinued as the market evolved.
