HTC

HTC, formally known as HTC Corporation or High Tech Computer Corporation, is a Taiwanese consumer electronics company headquartered in Taoyuan. Established in 1997, the firm originally operated as an original design and equipment manufacturer, focusing on the creation of laptop computers before pivoting its strategy toward the mobile sector. The company’s entry into the smartphone market was initially defined by its production of devices running on the Windows Mobile operating system. However, HTC quickly positioned itself at the forefront of the emerging Android ecosystem by becoming one of the thirty-four cofounding members of the Open Handset Alliance. This group of handset manufacturers and network operators was dedicated to developing the Android platform, and HTC capitalized on this involvement by releasing the HTC Dream, also marketed as the T-Mobile G1, which is widely recognized as the first commercially available phone to run Android. During the early 2010s, HTC achieved significant commercial success, notably becoming the largest smartphone vendor in the United States in the third quarter of 2011. Despite this peak, the company faced intense competition from major rivals such as Samsung and Apple, which led to a substantial erosion of its market share. By April 2015, HTC’s global market presence had declined to approximately 7.2%, and the company began reporting consecutive net losses, signaling a shift in its market position from a dominant leader to a niche player. In response to these challenges, HTC began diversifying its business portfolio beyond traditional smartphones in 2016. A pivotal move in this strategy was a partnership with Valve to develop the HTC Vive, a virtual reality platform that expanded the company’s reach into immersive technology. Furthermore, in 2017, HTC entered into a significant agreement with Google, selling roughly half of its design and research personnel along with non-exclusive rights to its smartphone intellectual property for US$1.1 billion, a deal that followed their collaboration on the Google Pixel line.
