HMD Global, which stands for Human Mobile Devices, is an independent mobile phone manufacturer headquartered in Espoo, Finland. The company was established in 2016 by a group of former Nokia executives who acquired the mobile phone business that Nokia had previously sold to Microsoft in 2014. This acquisition allowed the founders to reunite the hardware manufacturing capabilities with the iconic brand identity they had helped build over previous years. Upon its formation, HMD Global secured an exclusive licensing agreement with Nokia, enabling the company to produce and market smartphones and feature phones under the Nokia name. The company officially began selling these Nokia-branded Android devices and feature phones in December 2016, marking the return of the Nokia brand to the global consumer market after several years of absence from the smartphone sector. Since then, HMD has focused on delivering a wide range of devices, including budget-friendly smartphones, mid-range models, and rugged feature phones, often emphasizing durability, battery life, and camera performance. As a Finnish company, HMD maintains a connection to the original heritage of the Nokia brand, leveraging its reputation for reliability and design. The manufacturer currently operates as a standalone entity, distinct from the corporate structures of its former parent companies, continuing to innovate within the Android ecosystem while retaining the Nokia brand for its consumer devices.
