Caterpillar Inc., widely known by its brand name Cat, is a major American industrial corporation headquartered in Peoria, Illinois. Founded in 1925, the company has established itself as the world’s leading manufacturer of construction and mining equipment, as well as off-highway diesel and natural gas engines. Its primary business focus is on heavy machinery and power systems, supported by a vast global dealer network that provides services and maintenance for its industrial products. While the company is best known for its heavy equipment, it also expanded into consumer technology through a licensing arrangement. From 2012 to 2024, Caterpillar Inc. licensed its "Cat" brand to the British company Bullitt Group to produce a line of ruggedized mobile phones. These devices, marketed as CAT phones, were designed to be toughened and strengthened, targeting users who required durable hardware for harsh environments. This partnership allowed Bullitt Group to develop and market the smartphones under the recognizable Cat branding, leveraging the industrial reputation of the parent company. The licensing agreement for the mobile phone brand concluded in 2024, marking the end of Caterpillar’s direct involvement in the smartphone market via this specific partnership. Although the company continues to license its name for other consumer goods, such as workwear and boots, it does not currently manufacture mobile devices as a core part of its industrial operations.
